The DQH Class Canine Crew!

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

We love to boast about our great pointers and top notch retrievers. We’re proud that they provide our guests with countless exciting and safe shooting opportunities and the successful retrieves of shot birds. Our pointers also compete in wild bird field trials around the country. Their extensive experience, excellent manners and exciting posture around birds is what distinguishes them and makes them so popular with our guests. We welcome you to come enjoy hunting over them soon!

Joe (Champion Phillips Time Line)

Mazie about to release Joe at the 2011 Manitoba Open All-Age Championship (on sharp-tailed grouse and Hungarian partridge). Joe put down a scorching forward race in the middle of a hot dry day and was named Runner-Up winner!

This is Fin’s (Pal ‘O Mine) third season at Davis Quail Hunts. She competes in (ruffed) grouse trials and was Runner-Up winner in the 2010 Armstrong-Umbel Endurance Classic for grouse dogs in western Pennsylvania.

Fin spent many winters hunting wild quail in Texas. She is a particularly good “singles” dog, nailing individual birds after the covies are flushed.

Field Cocker Spaniel Charlie has also been with us for the past three seasons and has it down pat. Charlie is always a favorite with our guests!

Everyone’s favorite…Libby (Pal’s Sea Pearl) shown here pointing a woodcock at home in Maine.

Libby was born and bred in Texas and like her half-sister Fin, spent many winters hunting wild quail and competes on the grouse trial circuit in the early spring and fall.

Rick (Quicksilver Becrux) gets ready for his run in the 2010 Pelican Open All-Age Classic in Manitoba.

Field Cocker Spaniel Frack is always enthusiastic about doing his job — lightening-fast location and retrieval shot birds!

Her first season hunting at Davis Quail Hunts, Rita is the daughter of 7 x Grouse Champion Hard Driving Bev. She too has hunted wild birds in Texas and has competed in grouse trials throughout the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

Early November Hunts!

Friday, November 11th, 2011

Davis Quail Hunts is in full swing…and the quail hunting is fantastic! We’re having a wonderful time with all our guests — lots of them hunting with us for the first time and many returning to enjoy the great quail hunting, our exiting bird dogs and our Southern home cooking again!

Barry Rich brought his family on this hunt along with some friends.
They had a terrific hunt and really enjoyed the “turnip green soup”!

Mr. Zales is always a pleasure and his group was a delight to hunt with.
They made many great shots over Libby and Joe; keeping Frack and Charlie
on the go. Great hunting!

Libby points a large covey for Mr. Zales and friends.

Judson “Suit Man” and Hoke filled the bird basket, making Charlie very happy!

John Huges and friends enjoying the lodge after their hunt!

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

We had a great quail hunting season. Thanks to all guests…we had a wonderful time with you and hope you enjoyed your stay at Davis Quail Hunts as much as we enjoyed having you. We hope to see you again this coming fall and winter!

Mazie handles the bird dogs off horseback. Dogs at DQH really go hunting! When the dogs point birds, Mazie raises her cap and the hunting party is brought to the dog’s find. No need to rush though…dogs at DQH are broke and will wait till the shooters arrive, holding the birds mesmerized. When the shooters go in, the pointing dogs remain steady to flush, shot and finally the retrieve by one of the cocker spaniels.

Pete Does Good at the National!

Saturday, February 19th, 2011

We’re so proud of Ch. White Powder Pete. He put on a heck of a good show at the 2011 National Championship on Thursday afternoon! Pete had three excellent dug up finds and ran a great race for the time he was down. Colvin elected to pick him at about 90 minutes when he saw that his shoulder started bothering him. Pete was injured during his bid at the National Championship last year, incurring a small bone chip. This was his 7th time competing at the National! Thanks to our friend, William Smith for scouting Pete.

Pete is owned by Mr. Bert Wimmer of Rockville, Indiana. His son-in-law, Doug Burgess, also from Rockville, made the trip east to Tennessee to watch Pete compete in his last field trial. He will be ten in May. The Wimmer family decided to retire Pete after eight and a half years of competition. We were so pleased Doug got to see him do such a wonderful job!

The Wimmers have graciously allowed us to keep Pete here with us. We are very grateful to them as we are very fond of him.

At the 2011 National Championship!

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

Three Davis Kennels dogs qualified to compete in the 2011 National Field Trial Championship. This is the 112th running of the event held at the historic Ames Plantation in Grand Junction, TN. All three dogs were drawn to compete this week. Phillip’s Time Line owned by Rick Stallings of Matthews, AL made his bid Monday afternoon and Patriote, owned by Gary and Sally Lockee of LaGrange, TN ran yesterday afternoon. The weather was hot and dry and birds were not moving. We are proud of the valiant efforts of both Joe and Jim. Joe had one find during his grueling two hour and fifty minute bid though he hunted every step, handled perfectly and had a strong forward race. Jim, too, had an great forward-handling all-age race and finished the three hours bird hunting. He had two finds and one unproductive. Thanks to our friend Larry Huffman for scouting Jim and good luck to him when he competes in the 9th brace with Whippoorwill Radiance.

White Powder Pete who is owned by Mr. Bert Wimmer of Rockville, IN competes on Thursday afternoon. Hopefully birds will be moving by then giving Pete an opportunity to show his stuff! This is Pete’s sixth bid for the title of National Champion. Thanks to our friend William Smith who will be scouting Pete for Colvin.

Pete_CamillaMag

Our very own Pete graces the cover of the new Greenville, AL monthly publication, Camilla Magazine! The folks from Camilla were here last fall doing a story on Davis Quail Hunts. We haven’t read it yet but we’ll have copies soon!

Ch. White Powder Pete and kennel mates, Ch. Patriote and Ch. Phillips Time Line will be competing in the 112th running of the National Field Trial Championship in Grand Junction, Tennessee which begins on Monday, February 14. The drawing for the Championship is today and will be posted on the Ames Plantation website (Field Trials). To follow the day by day running and see photos, visit the Ames Plantation site here.

More January Hunts!

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

Galen McWaters and his family came down to quail hunt this past week. Small world! We discovered that we had worked a dog for him 15 years ago! The family had a great hunt and as Galen said after their hunt with Fin, “This is what it’s all about, a good dog putting her
heart into find these quail.” They were clearly thrilled to go quail hunting where the dog does the hunting!

Colvin, Fin and the McWalter family

Jimmy Gardner has hunted with us many times and he is always a pleasure to be with. His wife accompanied him this time as she gave him a Davis Quail Hunt for Christmas! Jimmy said he couldn’t have asked for anything better. They had a fantastic time hunting and showed such a sincere appreciation for the dogs and the management work done here at DQH to keep the land groomed for quail. And yes, Wanda Gardner was a great shot!

Fin Pins a Covey!

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

Fin_Jan

..actually “Fin” alias Pal O’ Mine pinned more than a few coveys here at DQH! She is spending her first winter with us here in Alabama. Every year of her life since she was 5 months old, Fin has pointed wild Texas quail. No wonder she has it down!

When she’s not with us, she’s with her owner, Chris Mathan or with her trainer, our friend, Joe McCarl, on the grouse dog circuit in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. Fin was Runner-up in the 2 hour Armstrong Umbel Endurance Classic for grouse dogs in Marienville, PA last March.

If you think you’d enjoy hunting our fast flying coveys with Fin or one of our other class bird dogs, book your Davis Quail Hunt today!!

Thanks to Sonny Culp for taking and sending us the beautiful photo of Fin he took while he was here.

December ~ Early January Hunts

Friday, January 14th, 2011

Wow, we have some catching up to do!!!

First off Happy New Year to all our friends!

We’ve been very busy quail hunting here at DQH. Right through the holidays, quail hunters came and had a great time shooting at fast flying birds over classy bird dogs! Freckles (Colvin calls him “Frack”) has been sharing retrieving duties with Charlie, who has a new place on the hunting jeep.

Thanks to all the great new visitors and return visitors. We certainly enjoy having you.

WP_Parker_1

John Parker enjoyed a couple days of hunting with his son, Will and son in law, Tony. John celebrated his birthday at DQH. Here they are enjoying a piece of birthday cake after a great day of quail hunting. They sure kept their gun barrels hot and Charlie and Frack busy!

WP_Miller_1

George Miller and his friends had a couple of cold — but exciting — days of quail hunting but to quote him “It was a great quail hunt not a quail shoot”!

WP_Zales

Bill Zales and his friends had a great two day hunt. They were very appreciative of the dogs and the quail hunting. As they all said…the only thing better than the hunting was the hospitality! We do try 🙂

WP_Richardson

Wade Richardson and his sons, Daniel and John were great guests for their two days at DQH. The young boys did a lot of shooting and made Charlie and Frack happy. It’s always great to see youngsters enjoying the outdoors and appreciating bird dogs and retrievers.

WP_Davis_1

Our friend, Greg Davis and his two partners all brought their sons. It was a fantastic day of quail hunting and good fellowship. We were pretty sure the boy’s tally passed their Dads!

WP_Slaughter

“Antlers & Anglers” Kevin Slaughter treated his brother Greg and Greg’s sons, Logan and Evan to a couple of days of quail hunting. We enjoyed spending some recreational time with Kevin and his family. We are proud to be associated with Antlers & Anglers Worldwide as our booking agent.

WP_Lott_1

Jeff Lott and his friend Paul certainly had a great day of quail hunting — their basket was full!

WP_Frederick

Frederick Beebe, a long time friend of Colvin’s, brought a group down for a New Year’s Eve hunt. How about that for a great way to end the year!

WP_Morris_2

Charles Morris and his friends brought in the New Year with a couple of days of terrific quail hunting. What a way to start 2011!

WP_Rhodes

Spears Rhodes and his friend, David were here last season and Colvin nicknamed them “The 410 boys”.  This time they brought the rest of “The 410 Boys”..Spears’ son, nephew and 2 friends. They sure filled those bird baskets up on the hunting wagon.

In the group was Pete Farrior who we learned had grown up in this county and was a cousin to the late Ed Mack Farrior — the legendary dog trainer! Along with the good quail hunting this day there were a lot of recollections of field trials and bird dogs told. What a treat!

WP_Birdsong_2

Our friend, Chris Birdsong visited us again bringing along his friend Haig and their two sons, Kit and Oliver. They all had a fantastic time hunting over Jack…and of course, Frack and Charlie were in on the action!

DQH welcomes Fin and Rita!

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Grouse dogs, Fin (Pal O’ Mine) and Rita (Hard Driving Rita) arrived safely at Davis Quail Hunts late this afternoon. Our field trial friend, Joe McCarl, delivered them to the airport in Pittsburgh, PA this morning and Colvin and Sherman picked them up in Montgomery after some flight delays in Atlanta. Both dogs have spent several winters being trained and hunted in Texas on wild Bobwhites and compete on the grouse dog circuit with Joe and their owner, our friend, Chris Mathan. Fin is a half sister to Libby, who many of our guests have shot quail over and Rita is a daughter of Joe’s seven time grouse champion “Hard Driving Bev”. We invite you to come and enjoy shooting over the newest members of the DQH bird dog team!
